According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), March 2011 was the worst month for high street spending since record began in 1996.

The BRC statistics have shown a drop of 1.9% in sales compared with a year ago. The only sector which has shown growth was internet sales which was up 7.5% on last year.

The BRC said, “uncomfortably high inflation and low wage growth have produced the first year-on-year fall in disposable incomes for 30 years”.
